“Painting is more than just a passion for me. It is a journey of expression, connection, belonging, and beauty, and the attempt to put the awe and wonder of the outer and inner world onto canvas. I believe in the human spirit’s universal desire for beauty, because it helps us transcend the mundane. While I still strive to depict the physical world as the eye sees it, my work increasingly shifts toward trying to capture the sensation of being immersed in a specific time and place. Rather than simply rendering an appearance, I want to evoke the feeling of being surrounded by and connected to nature—reminding us of our shared bond with the living world, and how, ultimately, we are all connected. The results often culminate to serve as a meditative visual refuge.  If I can connect you with your inner world to a profound experience, then that is what makes my work meaningful. And if only for the sake of beauty itself.”

Gabriele Niegelhell is an award-winning artist, born and raised in Graz, Austria. From very early on, she had a love for painting, pottery, and photography. She took a few art classes in Austria, but because of the general notion that she would not be able to support herself as an artist, she pursued a different career in languages.  Studies and adventure brought her to New Mexico, USA, where she met her husband, had her two children, and worked at the University of New Mexico. Once her children were both in school, she was afforded the opportunity to start painting in earnest and received furthering art education, but is largely self-taught.
