Darryle Bass

"Art has been my first love since the first time I held a crayon. On my first trip to New Mexico, I visited The Indian Cultural Museum and The Museum of International Folk Art. Seeing Storytellers for the first time, I knew I wanted to learn more about them. Coming from Chicago, I had never been very aware of South Western Art until then. A few more visits and I was hooked. Moved here in 2005 and began taking classes from artists like Robert Rivera (gourds), Tory Hughes (polymer clay) and Kate Church (dolls-cirque du soliel). Combining both my background experiences and new techniques learned from each of them I eventually developed my own style that I now call South Western Gourd Folk Art. All of my figures are individually sculpted using “Apoxy Sculpt”, painted, beaded, then dressed – usually in fabric and/or leather. Each develops their own personality as they evolve. I enjoy watching people smile when they see them; often likening my figures to someone they know."
