Alex Matthews -     "My practice as a sculptor is rooted in a deep, lifelong passion for form, material, and the act of creating. I work across a range of styles, allowing each piece to emerge intuitively rather than adhering to a fixed aesthetic. My creative process is often driven by an internal impulse, something instinctual that guides the work from concept to completion.

I draw inspiration from a wide array of sources - classical realism, Indigenous art methods from my tribe, anatomy, and the interactions with one another in our world. A sculpture might begin with the texture of bone, or something less tangible, such as an emotion, a dream, or a moment of curiosity. I rarely begin with a fully formed idea; instead, I enter a state of flow, letting the work reveal itself through material and motion.
A residency at Buffalo Creek Art Center offered me time and space to reflect and explore in new ways. That experience helped deepen my connection to my materials and allowed me to push the boundaries of my practice in a natural, immersive environment.
Above all, sculpture is more than a medium for me; it’s a lifelong pursuit that grounds me and gives me peace. Every piece I make is a reflection of my passion and a step further into artistic balance."
